Saw a lot of sick and dead kids. Mostly from disease (cholera, malaria, tuberculosis, even typhus) and starvation. Some from the gun battles that periodically erupted and we had to clean up the mess from or got involved in ourselves.

The actual combat didn't affect me all that much emotionally because I already been in Panama and this wasn't my first time shooting at people at getting shot at. But there's something about seeing all those poor kids from that makes you want to curl up into a ball and cry.

As for THE Battle of Mogadishu, my unit drove through the city a couple of days afterward and it was somehow reduced to even greater ruin than it was already in. Bullet holes, walls turned to swiss cheese, whole buildings flattened in a couple of cases. They were still getting rid of the bodies but fuck, there was blood everywhere.

One part they left out of the movie was that most of Task Force Ranger's vehicles were totaled and they wound up blowing up and ditching a bunch of them at traffic circle just outside of Aidid's neighborhood.

At the time we really were the world police. Not many countries could project their forces so far from their own borders in such numbers. The shipping lanes off the coast were key for US supplies. It was shitty all around and you had the CIA fucking up things in the background.
