Evolution is not about producing the best, it's about survival of the fittest. Nowadays the rich are the fittest. Having money can guarantee the survival of many generations. Look at rotchilds and other families.
If anything big happens millions will die. Natural disasters, war, illnesses, poverty, etc; can easily kill the many people and there's no guarantee that you can secure the survival of your descendants. The rich and their money can guarantee a cozy life for many generations of their descendants.
