The show is really good, the dancing and music is amazing. But there is legit Falun Gong propaganda in it. When I saw the show they did a couple of traditional dances, then the narrator guy says we are going to do a more modern piece and it’s a dance-fight of a cop beating up a dude holding a “Falun Gong is good” banner. A bunch of Changs got mad and walked out when it happened. Last scene was an opera singer singing about how falun will save us all while CGI Buddhas are projected on the back wall.

My little niece loved watching Chinese dance on YouTube. So I spent like $700 dollars on two tickets for her and my brother to go see Shen Yun in NYC. When it was all over, and I met them outside the theater, she acted like somebody had just run over her pet hamster with a steamroller (not impressed or happy at all). So much for all that money...

Apparently (as people have mentioned), it's the propaganda theater-troupe of Falun Gong. So I'm sure that there is some flipping around and traditional dance/music. But there's probably a lot of political bullshit too.

I saw the show in Detroit proably about 5 years ago. If you're into traditional Chinese song/dance and the artistic stuff then you'll get that in spades. Definitely entertaining and well produced.
As others have attested to there is a very strong pro-Falun Gong/anti-CCP message included, but to be fair to them they are so overt about it that in retrospect I think it would only seem weird to somebody who was completely unprepared for it. That being said, they do lay it on pretty thick. My wife is grew up in mainland China and is no fan of the CCP by any means and even she thought was it was a bit brazen with the messaging. Didn't take anything away from the rest of the show though so we still enjoyed ourselves.
False. My wife was still a Chinese citizen at the time and nothing of the sort ever came of it. Even if they wanted to the CCP is probably way too incompetent to keep tabs on whoever attends anyway.
Be aware that after the show they have people from the show go around the lobby with cameras and microphones and ask people interview questions about what they liked about the show - presumably the good ones get used for promotional blurbs or whatever. If the thought of that makes you uncomfortable then if they ask you just politely say no (they're not pushy about it, FWIW they never even bothered to ask me or my wife before we left, plenty of other adience members were willingly giving interviews that we saw).

Some aspects are pretty cultish, that cannot be denied. But the main reason is because it was growing fast and parts were trying to become more politically involved. The CCP could planet 'approved' bishops for their faux Christianity, but the falun gong nutters weren't giving in, so they got the metaphorical axe.

Shen Yun is based as fuck, at one point during one of their songs they straight up say Evolution and Atheism are poisonous ideas which keep us away from the divine, then at the end when all of creation returns to heaven to be with God, there are golden swastikas spinning all through the background. Was absolutely fantastic 100% recommend. They also bash on communism throughout the performance, emphasizing that it is an evil political system. so I will say that 90% of it is just traditional Chinese art and dance, the political commentary and religious commentary is only 10% of the whole performance.
