I'm going to a psychiatrist tomorrow to get tested (or whatever it's called) for ADD. I'm really nervous. I think I have it and I really want to try and find out if meds will help. But most of all, I just want to find out if I really do have ADD or not.
Do you guys have any advice for tomorrow? I'm bringing a social worker who's known me for about a year.

How is a single doctor able to test you?

What do you mean? He's a psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD. I don't really know what's going to happen tomorrow but regardless of what he's gonna do to find out if I have ADD, it's gonna lead to me being told whether or not I have it.

Do you think he will run around so much they need multiple doctors to spell ADD before OP starts to do something else?

A simple blood test requires multiple md workers

>implying you can be accurately diagnosed from a 10 minute test

Nigga it's ADD, not diabetes. I just called it "tested" because I don't know what it's called in English when you go to a doctor to find out if you have a mental illness. Surveyed? Examined? Investigated?

It's a lot harder to diagnose mental ilness than it is blood, t. Someome who actually visits psycitatrist

>10 minute
He's already taken a look at my symptoms, he talked to the psychiatrist who prescribed my antidepressants and I talked to him on the phone earlier this week. He's scheduled like 1 or 2 hours tomorrow and I don't know if I have to see him again after that before receiving my diagnosis. This is what healthcare is like in a civiliized country. 10 minute test lmfao

>implying a doctor can diagnose adhd without a certified test that takes multiple hours
top jej. and i am not an amerifat so i have decent insurance

Does anyone have any actual advice or does Jow Forums only consist of brainlets who think talking to a psychiatrist about ADD is just like getting a blood sample taken?

I didn't imply that at all. I said that I don't know what is going to happen tomorrow you dumbass. Maybe a multiple hour certified test is what's going to happen.

>maybe
>definitely
top kek

I don't get what the fuck you're talking about. Either you're a brainlet or I can't focus enough to figure out what you mean because I really do have ADD. I assume it's both.

>adhd brainlet calling others brainlets
jej jej hej

Why did you write >definitely? I didn't use that word in this thread. Are you a dyslexitard?

As someone with ADHD, I wouldn't be nervous. Often they ask you questions and depending on answers and other factors decide if you have it. Just dont let them prescribe adderall over a ritalin based med first, that they start you on a low dose and work up, and know you also have to make behavioral changes to make sure you keep up with stuff. Meds just help clear out the head noise.

who diagnosed you>?

I was 5 at the time, but I think it was a psyc and my doctor. I think the psyc observed me. They probably asked me questions but there is only so much you can ask a kid. I remember being in a room and playing with stuff. Apparently my mom mentioned how if they put a movie on i would watch it all the way through in one go, and thought that was a good thing instead of losing focus. Psyc said that was actually a sign cause instead of getting bored I watched it cause I hyper focused and kept my full attention.

Don't take their drugs. Don't fall for it user. I'm warning you. Life is fucking boring and you want to do something fun that's probably all it really is. Seriously don't do it they are not good people psychiatrists will eat your soul.

user with ADD here. Well, actually, apparently it's called ADHD -primarily inattentive now, more accurately. (But I personally prefer the old name, ADHD makes it sound too severe IMO.)

Just be completely honest about anything you experience as an issue or that you think could be a symptom, and try your best. I could tell you about the tests they had me do, but I don't want to "negatively" affect your mind going into it, as the whole point is to see how you react to things under certain circumstances. Most importantly though, do not be ashamed whether you have it or not. It can suck, and he say, in my case even just make maintaining eye contact difficult, but if you're only thinking it's ADD, it especially sounds manageable. Godspeed user.

My advice is not to worry.

OP here, today went awful. After talking to the psychiatrist and getting tested, he told me that he thinks I have ADD. However, because I was depressed back in winter, I won't be able to get a diagnosis or meds for awhile. He told me to schedule an appointment with my GP 4 months from now, and then my GP should refer me to a clinic that specialises in ADHD to get a diagnosis and meds. Apparently doctors aren't allowed to diagnose ADD in patients that were recently depressed because it takes upwards of a year to completely recover from depression.
The nurse who referred me to this psychiatrist fucking lied. She told me that he would give me a diagnosis if he thinks I have ADD.
So now I'm stuck knowing that I have ADD and that it's preventing me from working full-time but I can't get any treatment for months.

Why would having ADD stop you from working full time? That doesn't make any sense.

lol
told you.

Ok big brain, why the fuck would having ADD stop OP from getting a job full time.

I can't focus on anything for long periods of time. If I were to work 8 hours daily, I'd get nothing done and end up getting fired.

>okay big brain
onions boy is mad

What kind of work do you do? I have ADHD and cashier and do food delivery sometimes over 8 hours; unmedicated. Do you drink coffee?

Right now I don't have a job. I just finished school and now I'm looking for a job/internship.
Yeah, I drink about 2-3 cups daily. Why?

Coffee can help(or hurt) focus and aid in ADD. Now that you know that you have it, and can't get meds yet, you need to start doing behavioral changes. One program I use that is free is habitica. Its basically trello but with game and RPGs elements. It gets you to break down tasks into smaller pieces. When you complete them you gain health, in game money, ect. It's a good way to pavlov yourself.

I still don't see why that would stop you from getting some job opportunities going.

I've tried habitica a long time ago. I'll try it again user. What things do you use it for?
I have several other diagnoses too, including autism. DESU I don't which ones of my diagnoses are actually accurate because my old psychiatrist was a crazy bitch but my main symptoms are that I can't concentrate, I'm tired all the time and I get stressed really easily. The depression I had in winter was mainly caused by me being stressed and I only went to school 12 hours weekly at the time. I hope that ADHD meds will help me be able to work more than I can now but I'll probably never be able to work full-time.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your age and what level of education do you have?

19. The school I've finished is comparable to A-levels or high school. I dropped out of school twice before I finally went to a school for adults and finished it part-time.

Also, I should probably mention that I always used to dream about going to uni but now I doubt it's ever going to be possible unless I get meds and they work.

Go be discouraging somewhere else. Jow Forums is for creatively dismissive and sarcastic folk.

You might find in a year or two into treatment and/or therapy (latter is HIGHLY recommended to avert suicide) that past psychofuckery is what has been exacerbating your attention deficit

>past psychofuckery is what has been exacerbating your attention deficit
What do you mean by this?

Firstly congrats on finishing school. Considering how young you are I would take time to work on yourself before thinking about uni. If you have stress problems, uni is only going to make it worse. Some of the symptoms you listed can be from anxiety and ADHD. Stress from both will fuck with your brain functions. ADHD and autisium can have overlap in symptoms. If you don't find it THAT difficult to read people and social cues, its probably ADHD.
>habitica
Like I said its basically a glorified To do list. I mostly use it as a way to maintain and track good habits I set for myself like waking up on time, meditation, stretching, ect. Also the todo list part is good cause it gets you in the habit of breaking down tasks. Example is say how im getting ready to move out. I can setup a to do where I break down stuff into tasks: clean out closet, throw out unnecessary items, bag up desk trinkets, put items into piles to box, estimate boxes needed, reserve truck, ect. The bonus of gaming it with Habitca makes it more fun to use.

As far as advice for meds go this is mine: DO NOT LET THEM PUT YOU ON ADDERALL FIRST. My reason for this is compared to ritalin/concerta it has more active ingredients, stronger effect on the brain, and harsher withdrawal symptoms. Why it gets more prescribed over concerta I don't get. Also make sure they start you on the lowest dose and work up as needed. Starting too high will zombie you. If you do concerta, which I recommend and is time released, you want to do this:
-Take it in the earlyish morning after you eat, maybe lay off the coffee to start.
-a little past noon make sure to eat a snack or lunch. This med has a tendency of decreasing appetite which means you might end up over stuffing your face late at night from hunger and can leave you feeling muted. If I made sure to have lunch or snack, even if I wasn't hungry, I felt better and didn't experience those problems.

-concerta can make it difficult to fall asleep and make you feel emotionally mute. But if you follow my advice as mentioned and dosing you can minimize those affects.

Like I said work on maintaining healthy habits, take therapy to work on bettering your social skills and stress management, and dont expect quick results. The meds are just going to help quite the noise in your head, you have to do the rest. Just take this time to work on you.

Verbal, physical & sexual trauma can likely develop into dissociative disorders in order to cope.

Also tech can provide some uniformity as opposed to face-to-face socialisation thus creating an addiction...it's side effect being what you're experiencing. Only saying cuz I cut out FB & IG...attention span is widening. I have more time to think and feel about the daily transactions I have with people and I suffer a lot less as a result

Can you ever get undiagnosed? I have psychosis and bipolar but want to join the navy

If it's something that curable, e.g. anxiety, you can lose the diagnosis once you're completely recovered (so no symptoms even when you're not on meds). You'll never lose a diagnosis like bipolar though, even if you never have any depressive or manic episodes ever again.

What about psychosis? The thing is I read some articles saying that they might allow people with certain conditions with a waiver. One of them is bipolar so I'm not too worried about that one

I don't know but I don't think they'll let you in. Your best bet would be to contact the army and ask them.
Afaik, they don't really care about what diagnoses you have but more so about how those diagnoses impact your ability to serve. If they believe that there's even the slightest chance that you might start hallucinating on the battlefield or something like that, there's no way they'd let you join.

I just called my local recruiter. He said he's going to ask someone higher up and get back to me. Wish me luck

>Some of the symptoms you listed can be from anxiety and ADHD
I used to have anxiety but not anymore.
>If you don't find it THAT difficult to read people and social cues, its probably ADHD.
I don't find reading people that hard but I think I have both autism and ADHD, not just one of them.
>This med has a tendency of decreasing appetite which means you might end up over stuffing your face late at night from hunger
I used to be bulimic, so I hope meds won't trigger binges like that. I'll make sure to eat enough throughout the day.
>take therapy to work on bettering your social skills and stress management
I took therapy for 2 years (from I was 16 to 18). Do you recommend going back to therapy now that I know that I have ADD to focus on concentration?
Thank you so much for all of the advice.
I quit Runescape a couple of months ago and started going to the gym. I agree, cutting back on tech usage helps so much.

Bump to respond later

I was on Adderall IR 30 MG x 2 daily. I was thin and had the brain power of a Asian math major. After six years of taking it, kinda fried my brain a bit.

I'm trying to get back on it.
