It's a well-known dangerous asteroid that only takes about 6 months to orbit. Very easy to predict when the Earth will be near it, and it normally comes pretty close. If it was actually coming closer to the Earth than usual it would be easily predictable from publicly available data. They would have had to keep this a secret decades in advance, long before it ever became a threat, and every professional astronomer in the entire world would have to have agreed to keep it a secret for this entire time as well as supplying false data to the public this whole time.

There are so many points of failure here, especially considering that someone might misidentify it and report on its trajectory by accident even if everything else was in place. If someone was actually trying to downplay this asteroid it's probably because they don't want it to become a retarded doomsday prediction.
