However, they've embraced capitalism/trade enough to prop up their economy better than the Soviets, and I must begrudging admit that I admire their dedication to their own culture/people/way of life.

I think in many ways, they're a paper tiger, but it is undeniable that they're a rising power. I don't perceive much threat from this, because their economy is deeply entangled with the US economy, but we do have many conflicting interests/alliances that will likely cause some problems in the future.
