It's not a religion. With religion, it's all or nothing - if the Quran is the literal word of Allah, you don't get to pick and choose.
But Marxism is more like a vague family of ideas, often times contradicting ideas, that come from many people over a long period of time. At they're just people, not prophets or holy men. Karl Marx has no greater authority than I do, I am completely free to agree with some stuff he wrote and dissmiss other stuff.
Was the Soviet ideology a religion in practice? I'd argue yes. And it's precisely that reverance and orthodoxy that Zizek disagrees with.
