While the matter of probabilistic nature being proven is more of a philosophical debate, it should be mentioned that we couldn’t have proven gravity or relativity or black holes existed when we first conceptualized them, nor the atom itself, which was only caught in photo by a computer.

In other words, you can definitely still consider light a "wave" and also explain why it comes in packets. Also, this means that since light is just a wavefront, even if the "photon" is travelling through one hole in the slit, the wavefront is still moving through the other hole as well (it just sums up to zero over there)
