The one I got was pretty cheap in the end; $400ish inc box spring/frame/delivery, $20 to haul and old one away. As for box or not, the point is two-fold: raise the bed off the ground, and provide a firm flat surface to help reduce wear on it. A really good box is going to be of more value than a cheap one (my last for the crash bed was just a fucking pallet and your back would feel it after a night) but if you have a really nice bed frame that includes good wood base, you might not need it. I'd give you some more targeted info, but alas I can only help Michiganiacs on that
