Rian Malan's book is not concise history, but rather more of a personal journey. Still one of the best books about South Africa that I have ever read.
For all of it, Rian Malan remains an optimist, although sometimes he seems like he's just trying to convince himself. Anyway, he has a bunch of essays on the Spectator that are a fascinating read. I don't agree with everything he says, or even most of what he says, but the man has a way with words and is a joy to read:
