It was worth it. It completely immobilized the German army. Also their industrial output peaked in 1944. The main thing preventing them from reasserting some form of air control was a lack of oil.

In 1949, the Soviet Union acquired nuclear weapons. They provided clandestine support, largely logistic, to the North in the Korean War. Like the Chinese and North Koreans, they were the enemy.

During the Korean war the Soviets had nukes but not a reliable way to deliver them. It was the late 50s before they were a serious nuclear threat. If we had nuked Korea the Soviet response would have probably been to use our extreme aggression as fodder for propaganda in countries like Italy that were kind of on the fence of the cold war.
I knew I was grasping a bit when I brought up the risk of a preemptive Russian strike. The fact remains that you don’t want other countries to think you’re crazy and can’t be reasoned with.
