In some cases, the technology or typical usage that spawned the unit has progressed to the point that the old unit is less intuitive, e.g., tons of refrigeration. I find kilowatts more useful because I can easily put a chilling system in context: how much electrical power it draws, efficiency, etc. On the other hand, cups of flour/sugar/oil are better suited to baking than grams. The typical and limited calculations performed while baking are more intuitive when the unit is sized appropriately.

I remember back in the 1970s and 80s when I was in high school, people bought American reference physics textbooks and realized all of them used the Imperial FPS system while our exams and school textbooks used standard MKS.
The reason for buying American university textbooks was they were of better quality than our school texts which only covered the basics while the exam conducted by the government was difficult.
So, we needed higher quality books and the Russian Soviet era physics textbooks were of American quality, so what followed was a massive translation campaign to translate Russian books to English and Indian languages. Apparently, all the known archives of those books online are the Indian versions, the original ones don’t seem to be anywhere.
