What it meant in practice was that society abandoned moral arguments, that lead to needless but harsh inner conflicts, became indifferent to religion, because those arguments produce inner conflicts as well (this is argument from Hobbes as well)

So, since Protestant countries allowed for moral relativism with some general rules like don't kill, rape or steal, then Protestant societies turned their minds to pragmatic things, like trade, technology and politics.

Whereas catholic countries were during 19. century engaged in harsh inner conflicts about the place of religion and moral rules, Protestants have gradually abandoned them in favour of dedicating your time to gaining capital in trade, machiavellian politics and efficiency in technology, that would transform the world.

Protestant countries simply think that they can exist without the Grace of God, which is why they're the most degenerate countries on Earth, with the notable exception of Northern Ireland.
