I remember back in school during one of my editing classes there was this one forty something black dude who was in there with us. He was admittedly a pretty nice guy but was absolutely dogshit at editing, which is understandable considering the whole point of us being there was to learn from an industry pro. Then on the last day when we were showing our final projects and his turn finally came, I was almost shocked at how atrocious it was. It was like he hadn't learned a single thing since he first walked in the door and everyone else could see it too. But nevertheless when the teacher gave their critique following his, not only did they completely softball him and pussyfoot around critiquing him too harshly, they actually made a point to praise just how much he had learned since he started the class as if there was no one else there who only had the most rudimentary knowledge of what was being taught. He was the only one who got that treatment too. It was astonishing to see.
