"AI" is usually just glorified logic processing. The real cool shit is adversarial networks and other types of machine learning, but it cant really ever step outside of doing the things it is designed to do. While it isnt really quackery, the objective is misrepresented by "scientific journalism" and it leads to absurd and unrealistic notions about ai.

A.I. is just a marketing term at this point. When I finished my M.S. in computer science, I considered going for a Ph.D. There were 3 tracks at that point, one of which was A.I. After looking into it a bit, I knew this was where we were heading: Every piece of software in consumer electronics which make the user say "WOW! How did it know that??! It must be so smart!" was going to be "A.I."
It came to fruition when I wrote an autosuggest feature for a client about 12 years ago, before google autosuggest was as good as it is today. Our marketing term branded it "A.I." and lied in sales meeting saying in future releases it would be so smart, you wouldn't even have to type into the textbox.

From what I've gleaned so far - most companies have no idea what this is and how to use it. The big companies; Siemens, Microsoft know what they're up to and will leverage it. A lot of the SMEs regard it as a godsend when a few good placed IF statements would have done the job.

The current state of AI and "deep" "learning" is just your average middle-school statistics level of regression line fitting, except with a lot more dimensions. It's effective at a few narrow tasks like image classification, facial recognition, and OCR, but its utterly useless for anything outside that.

You're correct in principle, but model fitting isn't really "learning". The idea of neural units with inputs and activation algorithms are an EXTREMELY simplified method of how the brain works, and the jury is still out on whether the actual neuron firing in the brain is actually what makes us intelligent. AI today is just backpropogation and lots of matrix multiplication, both of which have been well understood in computing terms since the 1960's.

We are on the verge of entering another AI winter soon, mark my words.

Neural networks are just fancy visualizations. Under the hood, they are really just multidimensional matrices being multiplied and manipulated and reshaped. They are nothing like the networks that connect computers.

Those chess programs used heuristics to calculate the best moves within reason. There's nothing intelligent about them, they just apply the algorithm that was programmed in to make the next move. Our current systems have no such traits, our optimizers and evolutionary neural networks know nothing of why their outputs function. You mean like GAN's? They have opened up more possibilities within limited problem spaces (like this: make.girls.moe/), but it's the same shit at the end of the day. Instead of a loss function beating the model over the head as done in normal supervised learning, it's another model doing the beating. It's the same matrices and weights and accuracy metrics being optimized, just in a different way that might lend itself better to certain problem spaces, but still nowhere near true intelligence.

Graphics people only care about transformation matrices (which are still extremely useful). The matrices used in neural networks are many orders of magnitude more computationally expensive.

I should have been more clear: I meant the idea of a "network" of "neurons" being a fancy visualization itself, not the underlying technology which is just the same matrix multiplication that has been done since the 60's on mainframes, just now optimized with a bit of calculus.
I mean, manager types give a shit about technology if it's not "sexy", and cool powerpoint slides showing interconnected "neurons" gets them a LOT more excited than drab descriptions of the matrix multiplication reality. This is why researchers really hammer the "neuron" idea which likens the matrices to a brain, when neuroscience hasn't even confirmed yet if the matrix multiplication in these models actually matches what the brain does.

The only way to achieve true artificial intelligence is by meta programming, which means the computer will generate code itself, without the help of humans. I have been researching this stuff and I have seen not many papers about code generation. It is far more complex than what will have today, which is mostly pattern matching and modification of data. If a computer can learn about the environment we live in, then he will become intelligent by creating new ways to adapt to it, just like our brain works.

Simulation theory is hilarious, as it is nothing but theism under another name.
