Slavery continued there until 1960.

Liberia actually has an interesting history. Even though it never really developed, West Africa has to be one of the single most primitive parts in the world so no matter how relatively retrograde and not particularly civilized the black American settlers (or Americo-Liberians as they called themselves and became known) may have themselves seemed to outsiders, it was still fascinating for towns like Monrovia and Buchanan no matter how small and humble, to have existed at all in such an unlikely place.
