Personally I believe a ~50% divorce rate contributes to it a lot, with most young men whose parents divorce being raised by their mother primarily thereafter. Not that all single mothers (or mothers in general) are negative influences, but spending so much time with a woman can lead to you empathize with her and adore her to the point where the idea of teasing a girl or being assertive and confident around her can seem cruel and manipulative, but of course remaining "nice" and gentle is just boring for them.
