They've done a pretty good job so far considering their military assets have been sold off by corrupt politicians for years since independence. Every offensive of the separatists in Donbas has been pushed back and the conflict is niw at a stalemate. If Russia could pull a Georgia with Ukraine they would have in 2014, but Ukraine is not like Georgia, with its tiny population and low industrial potential.
Considering the fact that Ukraine recieved minimal aid fron the West (who by the way dishonored their promise to guarantee Ukrainian sovereignty in exchange for denuclearization) while the separatists have been getting a steady flow of armaments and (((volunteers))) from Russia, they've proven to be competent fighters. They could probably pull a Chechnya like Russia did in the 90s and just reduce Lugansk and Donetsk to rubble but they can't because those cities are densely populated and, admittedly, it would be diplomatic suicide.
Give it a few years and Donetsk/Lugansk will become another Pridnestrovye: young people will leave and only criminals and aging Vatniks and babushkas will remain.
