Why are schools allowed to sell snacks to kids? There should be a small free meal and that's it. A piece of fucking bread or something. It's a school. They're there to study. You can give them enough food and water to be able to do that effectively but it doesn't need to be a big deal, and it sure as hell shouldn't be a way for the school to pull profit out of its students. The problem is that schools these days have expensive snack bars entirely separate from the cheap cafeteria food you and I are familiar with. You load up fucking prepaid cards for the kids to spend their money at these snack shops that double as school suplies which was how they got away with it in the forst place. A little place for kids to buy pens and paper. Yeah fucking right. They spend all their cash on fucking snacks and sports drinks. The school pulls in a huge profit distributing those things.

Mine too. Peanut butter sandwiches were free without having to do any paperwork, you just told them you couldn't afford food and they'd give it to you. I had the reduced school lunch prices, but didn't qualify for the fully free.

They had the snack bars at my school too, and it's clearly a huge amount of income for the school. Right after I graduated they stopped allowing it at my school, they even removed all the vending machines.

I know, this is disgraceful. At my school if someone ran up a lunch tab over $100 they weren't allowed to get lunch anymore. Why is she able to freeload $8000 off the government interest free?

Something interesting that I don't think has been pointed out enough is the violent way the extremes of nigger shortsightedness and impulsiveness crash into a system meant to reward delayed gratification and responsibility. They sometimes so totally violate the expected norms of decency, that the systems in place to discourage such dysfunctional behavior is forced to punish them severely in a way that looks unfair upon first glance. It's a real square peg in round hole scenario and there's no obvious solution because equality.

My family also went to food banks pretty often, but we probably would have relied on them even more if there wasn’t free school lunch. I’m inclined to think food banks are better, as it’s not forced charity (like taxes).
