I think it might be more important that we frame the "conversation" in clear contrast to leftist language, rather than try to subvert leftist language.

Fascists organize governments in a top-down power pyramid with violence mediating the hierarchy. It requires an "in" group and an "out" group. If your friends who held that violent ideology were using it as a tool to endorse more democratic governments, those are by design less lethal and more inclusive. Fascists don't strike me the same way anti-fascists do. Fascists seem to want to cull the population, forcing weird conditions like racial purity or religious purity. I feel we can carry forward with enough space for everybody who's not infringing on the liberty of their neighbors. It does require more thought, compromise, and patience to do it without fascism. But I've seen people who have lost friends/family/loved ones to the violence of others. It's never worth it. Every atrocity echoes forward and poisons our society. Less senseless evil and more compassion has a profound effect on the lives of every person alive.
