AI is a big problem considering we don't even understand what sentience means. Even a program that can reprogram itself is still limited by the frame of the machine. See people are constantly interacting with their senses and the world in a constant feedback process from which consciousness emerges. Even a program that's super efficient and self replicating is likely to not be self aware and certainly short of consciousness.

What we call "AI" today is little more than efficient information retrieval that learns to be more efficient. There is no sentience. There is no consciousness. This is why the "Turing Test" is such a retarded concept. Machines like Watson could easily fool humans without being anywhere close to sentient.

Even in futureland a human produced mechanism of any sort would still be far from how our brains function. Designing a biological computer modeled after our brains would requiring understanding brains first. And designing them after a human brain would probably be a bad idea on the highest order.
