Another thing to note about the Egyptian Pyramids and the Spynx , was that they were buried under sand after thousands of years and was excavated and uncovered by French explorers in the 1920's.

These artifacts would have been completely buried and forgotten about in the modern age if this didn't happen. Also, much speculation points to the Spynx having a lion head, originally. Apparently, the head was carved down to be the head of a ruler, much later throughout history.
