I read a (very shitty and overwritten) article on a more effective technique called amygdala hijacking. The basic goal is to use similar tactics they use on you (emotional type) but with the specific implied threat of out-grouping.

Basically you want to present a dilemma in which either of their preferred answers threatens their group status while not yourself being motive or using emotionally charged words.

It can be difficult to utilize but seems fairly effective at causing a meltdown or shutdown.
