i once gave $30 to a homeless man. i saw him regularly and would sometimes give him my change as i walked out of my local quickshop.
i used to buy energy drinks and dip almost every night
He told me he needed a motel for the night because it was going to freeze. There were going to be sub-zero temps that night

I have friend who was street homeless. One of the problems with being homeless is that you're in constant fear of other homeless people and it's very hard to sleep well at all. After a couple of days of this you start to go crazy.

I would never beg, even if I was poor. I'd rather scavenge, pick or hunt, but never beg. Beggars are those who have given up on trying or have never tried. You can never help them, because they have no drive to improve their situation. That's why they're begging. They rely on other people's work rather than their own.

I commute on the train in Chicago, if I'm on my way home from work and see homeless people asking for money I offer to buy them food instead. The results have been pretty eye opening. Usually they tell me to go fuck myself, but sometimes they're extremely grateful. I don't give them cash because I don't want them to spend it on drugs or alcohol to hurt themselves further. But feeding a starving person is honorable. They're usually mentally ill, usually drug addiction but sometimes something else. It's not their fault they can't function.

If the person is homeless there's a very good chance that they're either mentally ill or addicted to drugs, in western countries it's very hard to get all the way to homeless when you have friends, families, churches and the government welfare and services to fall back on.

I never give to the homeless because the government already takes tax from me in order to address homeless people, pay welfare etc, and they put reasonable limits on those systems such as you need to prove you're looking for work or that you're signed off sick by a doctor. If they can't meet those basic criteria then no gibs.

Besides really helping these sorts of people is very hard, it takes professionals a lot of effort and resources to rehabilitate them, whatever dumb thing you're gong to do like give them money will almost certainly make them worse.

It's hard to tell which beggars are real and which are fake.

I bought a bum a bottle of water once. Man had to have been in his 60s, and it was over 100 degrees outside and humid as fuck. However, I always stop to help cars on the side of the road, push them off to a side street or give them a jump. When I was a teen I slid off the road into three feet of snow in the middle of the night out in the middle of nowhere before I had a cell phone, some guy driving along stopped and pulled me out, figure I'd repay the gesture when I can.

You all make valid points, but in Canada in particular, most of our homeless are mentally ill. Mental health is a major issue in Ontario so I feel like it's as if they have the mind of a child.
Theyre probably addicts as well but still, in those cases I dont think theyre just lazy. Some of them I have encountered are legitimately batshit.

My city is over saturated with homeless shelters. I have volunteered at them in the past. They are NEVER at capacity, even in the dead of winter. The only reason they ever turn someone away is if they are visibly intoxicated or violent, and even then they have referral programs to send them off to get help if they agree to receive the help. What this means is that every single homeless person you see in my city is either so addicted they can’t even sober up for 24 hours or so bat shit insane they can’t keep from lashing out for 24 hours and also have refused help. Why the fuck would I give them my money?

There is a huge homeless shelter in my city. It's always empty because if you're caught doing drugs you will be permanently banned. So people go there to sleep and then spend all day/night/anytime they're not sleeping roaming the streets getting high.

They choose to. There is nowhere in the city where they are more than two miles from a shelter. That’s not hyperbole. And the shelters even do work training and mental health and addiction work all for free. All they have to do is not do drugs for a day and show up and not hit anyone.

3. The absolutely insane

Never. Used to do it out of pity when I was younger, but after that I realized how much money they actually make per month, not to mention the fact that most of them are actually in gangs that specialize in these sort of stuff (at least here in Eastern Europe). I had my eyes opened by a guy that did a documentary on them - most of the homeless that beg for money pretend to be poor, it's all an act for them. They make more than 1500-2000 euros/month, they have cars and houses, some of them even live in 4 or 5 stars hotels.

You'd think that giving a guy 1 dollar on the street wouldn't really make a difference, but think about this - how many people give him money per month? How much money does he actually get, and how much of that money is taxed (hint: none)? So you're actually not only incentivizing them to beg for more money, but you're also financing some degenerate's comfy life while you go to work every single day like a wage-slave. Call me unemphatic, but I don't really care for them at all - if I want to help someone, I'd rather go to the church and donate some used pieces of clothing, or make some packs with food in them and given them out to old babuskas when there's a religious day to celebrate.

Sure, there are cases of real homeless people that ended up on the streets because life is ruthless sometimes, but most of them can change their lives around if they want to - but they don't, and people giving them stuff for free only makes them continue on with their shitty life.
