How many are aware that when Iceland made a strong commitment to neutrality during WW2 and Britain didn't like it, they simply invaded and occupied the island. Has this ever been acknowledged or has the UK ever apologized for this? What do Icelanders think about this event? Why didn't they resist?
Of course they would be no match for the Allies but it's hard to believe that they were simply occupied on a whim with no repercussions.

It was either by us or the Nazis. Iceland is too strategically important to be ignored. The "invasion" was entirely peaceful, they continued running their own domestic affairs and our occupational force left when the war ended. It wasn't like it was annexed. It was more like it was garrisoned to prevent the Nazis taking it.

Their wish for neutrality was unfortunately a pipe dream. Control Iceland and you control the North Sea, and can effectively surround Britain. If the Nazis had taken it first we'd have had to try to liberate it (or at least bomb it), and that would have turned their country into a warzone. There was no Icelandic resistance like what the Nazis contended with on the mainland. Our occupation made it more trouble than it was worth for the Nazis to invade, so we effectively kept them out of the war.

Besides the occupation of Iceland was actually taken over by the US sometime during the war, and they refused to leave until fairly recently. I believe the US military only handed back their last base at an airfield 10 or 15 years ago.

They were called the F.BI. "Forgotten Bastards of Iceland". Saw one of these in a frame at a tag sale and learned a little bit about it.
