That's why I can promise you that automated trucks will not happen. The free market will not allow cargo to be transported unguarded across America. Nor will any regulated market. Nobody's willing to risk that shit. Any truck will have to be accompanied by a human, and armed security guards cost at least as much as professional drivers. Then there's HAZMAT. Anything running HAZMAT will absolutely be required to have a human controlling it. Not even trains are allowed to transport HAZMAT without several people in control.

Imagine all the lawsuits when driverless truck plowns into kindergarden or opposite lane. Who will be held liable? One lawsuit could cost 100x drivers yearly salary in US.

None of the lane assist stuff I've tried work in finnish winter conditions. Sensors freeze and they cannot read road which is covered with ice and snow. AI will never be perfect and accidents are inevitable. Cargos and trucks are really expensive and I don't think that the insurance companies will pay for accidents if there's no driver.

Who will load/unload cargo anyway? Some walmart employee doesn't know how to pack and secure cargo properly and they still have to pay extra for him. How AI will know where to reverse to unload cargo? Robbing would be really easy because you just need one car in front which slows down gradually and stops. Risking millions worth of cargo and equipment for small save doesn't seem viable specially with inevitable lawsuits.

Maybe AI can drive on flat straight desert road but at least here in Finland they will never replace drivers. Lumber industry is really big in here and AI cannot driver on narrow and twisty gravel roads which are not marked in GPS specially during winter.
