This is true. I work for municipal government in a city of nearly a million people as labourer. The job requires no post secondary, is local, and guaranteed hours. Base pay for a labourer starts at 50k a year and goes up to 63k after three years. Overtime is payed at 2x your wage an is fairly plentiful. If a worker takes all the overtime offered they are probably making a little under 70k as a new hire and 88k as a maxed scale labourer. There are all sorts of premium for working shifts and one will get priced up for certain jobs. So making 90k a year is possible for someone classified as labourer. Which is crazy considering how easy the job is and that it requires no education. Foremen and inspectors do slightly better, both require no post secondary education.

If you do have post secondary education you can do really well. Supervisors make 115k+ and directors 180k+. Also there are a lot of clerk and tech type jobs that require two years of post secondary that can do well. The engineering tech in my yard makes $54 an hour. Though he does not get overtime, but who gives a shit when you are making $108k a year stress free.

I live in an area where the government is the largest employer, and has ALL of the high paying jobs. It used to not be like this, but they've put so much pressure on local businesses that the private sector dropped dead. They make all of their revenue now by taxing the fuck out of the nearby city, while dealing with the city's criminals generated by the infinite spic-nig cycle.

What used to be factories are now about two dozen law offices, bail bondsmen, and EVERYONES wives work for the government, where they manage the spic-nig cycle.

They get 30-40k starting, to process paperwork that current AI can do. I just can't get the fuck out of this place any faster.

Some do, though the city pulls in a lot of tax dollars and is in good shape financially. I would say it is question value, not sustainability. Currently having cuts on the management side because they figure we are top heavy. I would also cut half the labourer pool and rehire as well because there are way too many lazy and worthless workers.

It looks like the city is tying to privatize more work, but this is a mixed bag. The maintenance type work I do is an area where I have seen companies fucking the city over worse than the union workforce. Private companies have lower labour costs but make it back by overcharging on materials and seeking to replace rather than repair. There have also been cases of private companies charging out equipment use and labour when there was none.

Most government workers are really private contractors the government hires out.

I am all for saying fuck the government -- HOWEVER -- those numbers are not necessarily reflective of reality. The government workers are paid for by location - their location for a huge chunk of them is in North Virginia and Maryland suburbs, the most expensive cost of living areas in the country.

You can be in the same pay band and then be in Alabama and be paid like half.
