Trolleys were good because busses were bad until the 60's, modern busses are superior to trolleys. Biggest issue is the infrastructure requirements, roadworks becomes 4 times as costly due to the tracks, which over time destroys the pavement. Secondly you now need qualified mechanics maintaining the trolley, every city is going to have busses and bus depots, now you need a trolley depot. Busses are flexible and take up the exact same area on the the road as a trolley, can transport the same amount of passengers (bending) and they are cheaper due to mass production. Let's not forget the larger pool of buss drivers than trolley operators.

Car companies didn't destroy public transportation, suburbs did. Trolleys are for short trips in cities (where they're still used), and as transportation from transit hubs, like train stations, to areas where there are no train stations. Buses do the same thing.
Trollies are impractical moving people from downtown, to a suburban area. Which is why the trains running from NYC to outlying suburban areas are still in wide use.

We used to have them in the city I live in back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but the car culture killed them. We've got a streetcar now but nobody really uses it and everyone hates it because it goes through the nigger neighborhoods.

San Francisco's trolleys are mostly for tourists. Light-rail, in general, is usually a mistake and has more to do with the egos of politicians and liberal yuppie types than sensible public transit. What the United States needs more of are buses and BRT systems. They are way more cost effective and useful than a light-rail system
