I remember a time when people belonged to "subcultures" which were thought to be underground, unknown to the general public, and subversive. Now it seems that everything is exposed as and commercialized.thiscis largely because people live on public social media platforms where nothing is occluded. Style based subcultures have changed. It used to take commitment to be a Raver, now you just put on some pasties and go drop Molly. It’s like the Church of the Subgenius. You get a short duration personal savior when needed, you buy a subcultural costume for the occasion.

You cant be subculture without being counter-culture, its one in the same now. You cant be really into golf and say thats a subculture, it'd be considered too 2 dimensional. On the other hand, most subcultures you see are largely artificial, they go down their checklist of needs in terms of fashion, music, slang ect. But you can tell it has no real identity of its own. If you're worried you're apart of artificial subgroups ask yourself this; would this still exist if the group's adversaries didn't exist? If no, then you're getting played.

I was into biker stuff, got a lot of shit for it from the casuals (chavs of the 80's) but luckily the other metal biker teens liked to fight and after a few bashings they left us well alone.

I think you are right, the size of a subculture (prior to it being revealed) has collapsed.
Perhaps a 5 or 50 person whatsapp group, but any larger or more visible and it is instantly reported on, especially if it could potentially be "bad" in some way. And just about anything can be painted that way.
I've seen "expose" articles in the past by newspapers and magazines about communities which consist of at most 50 people, perhaps a few more.
