The problem progressives have with medieval studies is that it addresses the actions of unapologetic white men with reverence and seriousness, describing epics of action and reaction with nuance that shows the strong minds behind those actions. My experience was more political. Through upper division undergrad and grad I struggled with refining a political orientation in order to direct my scholarship. Epistemological rules of thumb we’re especially inadequate because I came to see that no one there was playing by them, only using them reactively as strategic weapons against the political/ideological other.
