This is good advice. If you act like someone who might be converted then an ideological slave will be more willing to engage with you. the toughest lesson I've had to learn in my 43yrs is that you cannot make people do the right thing, and it doesn't even matter if it's the best thing for them.

My ex caught the divorce bug, and she thought she and the kids would be better off without me (granted, I was in the first year of having started my company). It only took a couple of years for me to hit my stride in a very niche field of software development that is 90% recession-proof. I make ~5x what she does, and I my detached 3.5 car garage is roughly the same sq footage as her rental. Enough preening about myself--the point is that it hurt her and our two young children (our second was only FOUR MONTHS OLD!). I couldn't talk her out of it to save our little family. She's a teacher, and certain times of the year I know she's under a ton of stress. During those weeks (like now) I do my best to put it out of my head the thought of her doing something awful to the kids and herself to escape.

ps: she gets no money from me, because in FL, you can only use the PAST 5 yrs of marriage to calculate support/alimony.
