Mass movements aren't a thing anymore. You can't just from a squad and go around force-feeding Communists castor oil anymore.
Hell you can't even do something as benign as forming a union anymore. People are too distracted. Used to be you'd meet up with your bros at the pub/beerhall/whatever and share war stories, ideology, etc. And then go round to the local communist meeting place and kick their asses, and the police would look the other way because their bourgeois masters hate commies too.

The best reason for nationalism is that it's just one layer to the onion of decentralization of power, just like states vs federal in the US, and counties/cities within those. Separation of power makes it harder for a tyrant to take over, it's just that no one thinks of this as useful in a global context because no one has come close to ever conquering the entire world in history, even the most impressive feats, the british or roman empires, alexander the great, etc.. don't come close.
But power being separated allows cultures to have diffferent eco systems to thrive or fail and for peopel to have the ability to move around and pick what culture suits them the best.

Call people or if touch elitists deserving the guillotine if they say western labor needs higher education, and call it racist and exploitive to outsource and import labor at below market rates.
A party in power can change its positions. Chapo socialists are not big fans of identity politics. The DSA recognize the need for borders and lessening outsourcing, Bernie Sanders does to. You will lose them if you make racial arguments for immigration, but plenty can be convinced by economics. If they and the online alt-right formed a coalition on these values it could easily become a national political contender. The two candidates to come out of anti-establishment internet politics are Trump and Sanders, Sanders came close to taking the party over and Trump succeeded. Millennials and Gen Z are nationalists and socialists. Combine and conquer.
