I urge all anons not aware of this band to listen to them. A salty dog is my fave album of theirs but this album and the one before are bretty good. They are still a band, new stuff is hit or miss for me though.

I dunno, their style was kinda not really original. The kind of songs they were writing in the 60s pretty much sounded like Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over".

So they were like a synthesis of 50s' rock'n'roll melodic songs and some beat music like The Searchers.

What made them successful is that instead of just having a few hits like the other bands, they had one hit after another. They discovered a recipe for "pop" rock'n'roll songs which played very well to normies' ears, with simple harmonics and notes and simple song structures. They added some edge to that (like some beat syncopations) and their personality cults, and that was pretty much it.

So I'd say they were overrated, but not that they lacked any value whatsoever. The recipe just worked very well, because if you took every one of them separately, they were each pretty mediocre instrument players with mediocre voices.

Just listen to their solo albums to see just how mediocre their performances were. What lifted them was the melodic and easy-to-sing and remember songs. They had this hopscotch rhythm and this happy, positive, naive emotion to them.

As musicians, judged individually by techinal ability none were especially great, nobody says for example Ringo is the best drummer in the world, nobody claims Beaorge is the greatest guitarist or Paul the best vocalist etc, and nobody claims that Lennon and Mccartney are the greatest song writes in the history of music.

However as a package, when you weigh all the different elements up together, the combination of their personalities (which cannot really be quantified), the unique sound they made, the ridiculous knack of coming up with a ctachy tune, of writing lyrics that resonated with the youth of their time, the chemistry between them and the energy they generated during a performance, other things that can't really be quantified but there are plenty of accounts from people who saw them during their Hamburg days who said they'd seen and heard nothing like it.

They are not overrated at all, they conquered the world, they used to bring stadia full of teenage girls to orgasm just by playing a few simple chords, most of what has followed them in popualr music owes them something.

Definitely. Both of my parents are from the 50's and they never really bothered with these British dumb fucks that are The Beatles. There was so much better music back then aside from Beatles. Pink Floyd, Stones, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash. I don't get the fucking appeal of this hipster trash.

I hate their revision of history (blackbird) but damn the fab 4 were not overrated. their music is appreciated even more with the knowledge that a lot of it was pioneering with no precedent. idk what it was but these four and their producer made some of the best rock of all time.
