I'm somewhat more cynical about things than you are. Biden could easily take back Pennsylvania and Michigan and then win the election by flipping either Georgia or Arizona due to demographic shifts. That would give him the election.

Dems are selected by the media first and pushed out as a front runner. Differences in media coverage (negative vs positive framing) are used to shape the polls how they want it to go. After the framing, candidates get hyped into the nominee position and Dems vote for anything under "D" or whichever argument on their voter pamphlet sounded nicer / gave good feelings.
