The problem with American schools is twofold.

1. They worry too much about grades. That is all they shoot for increasing grades and it usually involves bullshit like this.

2. Teachers cannot beat kids. Every classroom should hire a retired NHL enforcer to beat kids every time they act up. That alone will raise test scores more than any fancy tech can.

I go to a top public university, which is also one of the most applied to schools in the country. If admission were purely merit based then the student population should be 100 percent Asian and White due to the large applicant pool, but its not—it's about 60% Asian and White (not counting international students). De facto affirmative action is still occurring even though de jure affirmative action is supposed to be illegal in public universities.

Of course, a method such as this will only serve to sidestep the problem of affirmative action technically being illegal at public colleges for two reasons: 1.) This "score" is being calculated by the agency administering the test, not a given college itself. And 2.) A college can claim that it is not affirmative action since the "adversity score" may not technically be based on race, but is instead based on factors very closely associated with certain races.

This is all to be expected, of course, because you can't really shape demography or biology. It's a lot easier to purposely hand an advantage to Blacks and Latinos than to, say, make them biologically smarter (which is impossible). Look at the public school system in Washington D.C.—despite being among the nation's highest in per student funding, the students perform extraordinarily poorly. I probably don't have to tell you why.

Of course, part of the idea is that by sending more Blacks and Latinos to college you will be raising their eventual earning potential. Normally I would say this isn't necessarily the case (just because you got into college because of affirmative action doesn't mean that you're as capable as your Asian and White peers), but in many segments of the working world this doesn't matter. Blacks and Latinos will just get hired for government work where performance doesn't really matter because the consumer (taxpayer) is forced to pay

An ACT of 30 (95%) is correlated to an IQ of 125, which is close to 2 standard deviations from the mean.An IQ of 150+ is 99 percentile, so it's very close to 30 and the error of any test as you get to the ends is great.
