My generation has been groomed/conditioned to vote as liberally as possible; I was liberal as fuck as a kid too (won't detail the pathway to changing that). During the elections literally everyone I knew in college was voting for him. Having discussions with them was impossible as they were not interested in having their conditioning challenged, possibly part of the programming. Canadian governments tend to turn over every ten years giving a sitting government at least two terms (one term is four years). It's mostly because people are fickle and get bored with a sitting government and want change for change sake.

The previous Conservative government had been in power for around eleven years and then Trudeau showed up gave the electorate something novel to vote for. Bear in mind he seized power with 39% of the popular vote so hardly an endorsement from a majority of the voters but that's the nature of first past the post voting systems.

And that's really it. That he may lose in October after one term in office just shows how much of a fuck up Trudeau really is and if the sitting Liberal government does fall in October Trudeau may be forced out of the party.
