In ye' olden times unwanted children were still a problem. Without ultrasounds folks decided this standard called "the quickening" was to be used. If the baby's formed enough to kick inside the womb, it's too far along and would be aware if you tried to remove it. Midwives and other ye' old bullshit could be used to "send the baby back to God", because here's the grand reveal most smart people pick up on:

If you don't have adequate life insurance to provide for your family should something happen to you, you're a bad father and husband who doesn't deserve to have a family. That user isn't going to kill you but a random accident or medical condition can take you away from your family at any time. If you truly loved them, you would have already arranged for their well-being after your death, untimely or not.
