Good point. Guns can be had in the majority of US states without a background check. Private sales like on Armslist are legal and frequent. Sellers sometimes don't even ask for ID. You can obtain pretty much any civilian legal gun without a paper trail just through the use of legal internet channels.

Unironically a safety less full size 9mm like the G19, VP9, P30 with LEM V1. I find smaller "purse" guns to have too much kickback for most women and manual safeties tend to get bungled by women who shoot the gun once when they get it. They're also less prone to failure from limp wristing than a smaller gun. Revolver might also be a viable choice but I don't have much experience with them.

Post a budget and what you're looking to do with it. The generally recommended combat handguns in the $500 range are a Beretta 92, Glock, CZ, Arex or M&P. They'll all run well and feed just about any ammo while holding a lot of rounds, if you can go to a range and shoot each one, failing that handle as many handguns as you're considering before purchase. Sometimes something will jump out at you that you like or hate.

Glock sucks and Mike Adams brought up this thing where the lip is polymer and the slide is polymer so grates away at the lip of the mag and eventually the mag falls out.
