Short answer is because it is not necessary and is way too much of a fuck around. Terrorism is a misnomer in terms of casualties. The goal is not to pose an existential threat but to strike fear and intimidation. You can do that with a cell phone and a few propane canisters. There is no need to go through the extremely expensive and complicated process of acquiring and successfully detonating a fucking nuke. Plus terrorists are retards and not Bond villains so wouldn't be able to do it no matter how hard they tried (and have tried).

No terribly hard to do. In the old days you detonated tnt that surrounded the ball of plutonium. the only caveat was that it had to explode evenly and at the same time around the plutonium ball to start the fission process. This is why if a nuke just fell and hits the floor before being armed and the tnt explodes nothing will likely happen. the explosion wouldn’t be equal all away around the plutonium and the fission process would fail to start. I’m sure modern nukes have a better way to start this process.

Nathaniel Russell

Nuclear Weapons aren't necessarily hard to manufacture, especially in this day and age as others have said, the hard part is obtaining enough fuel substance, either Uranium with an isotope number of 235, that is 92 protons and 143 neutrons in its nucleus Or plutonium with an isotope number of 239, that is 94 protons and 145 neutrons.

Uranium 235 is very difficult to mass produce, because it is hard to separate the same chemical element with different number of neutrons because they all act mostly similar chemically.

Plutonium 239 on the other hand is not very difficult to mass produce, but it is very difficult to obtain if you don't have the right equipment. For example you would need a fast breeder reactor that bombards Uranium 238, which is non-fuel Uranium you can normally find anywhere with neutrons, these neutrons have a chance to trans-mutate the Uranium 238 into Plutonium 239. It would be very difficult to covertly do this, especially since breeder reactor technology is still very much primitive, and there's almost no one officially using breeder reactors for power generation.

So simply put, Uranium bomb = very hard to get the fuel, easy to make the bomb itself

Plutonium bomb = very hard to make the necessary technology required to easily make the fuel, easy to make the bomb itself.

Also, the reason why Plutonium is even more so a controlled substance is because it takes far less of plutonium to make a working bomb than a Uranium bomb. It takes roughly 50 kilograms of Uranium 235 to form critical mass, that is the mass required for neutrons to cause a chain reaction and produce more neutrons (aka supercriticality)

But for Plutonium, it only takes 10 kilograms of Pu239. Hence, why the existence of suitcase nuclear devices have been known to exist, and that some went missing when the Soviet Union collapsed.

They literally fell out of planes. During the CW both Russia and America kept long-range bombers in the air 24/7, America doubly so once Russia beat them to the creation of the ICBM. The pilots had to fly insanely long shifts, refuel in midair, and survive on a diet of paste and amphetamines. Pilot error and mechanical failure were both equally prevalent.

That’s not to say some of those losses couldn’t have been “arranged” for somewhere like Israel or Pakistan to kickstart their nuclear arsenals, I guess.

They probably would. No one has ever invaded a country that currently possessed nuclear weapons.

As for building an atomic bomb: the actual design for a fission bomb is incredibly simple. It's just a shotgun that fires uranium into more uranium. The problem is getting the material. You need either uranium-235 or plutonium. Plutonium can be made if you have shitloads of uranium and set up a breeder reactor, which is a very complex and dangerous process and takes a long time. U235 exists in small amounts naturally and can be separated from regular uranium by reacting it with fluorine to form uranium hexafluoride and then running it through a big centrifuge. This is incredibly dangerous and complex, takes a long time and requires enormous amounts of uranium. If you have weapons grade material, the bomb is simple enough to build, but getting it is the problem.

Pu nuke needs shaped explosives for the implosion ignition and you need to machine both the core and the explosives to 1/10000 mm accuracy. Electronic design is also almost impossible to make unless you are a state actor with deep pockets and plenty of skilled engineer. Quranic studies do not help, imagine that!

I'm sure someone has probably answered this, but I'm not going to trawl the thread. In short, fissionable nuclear material is ABSURDLY expensive to produce, as well as Difficult and Dangerous to handle.

Even if you COULD get the material, just the mettalurgy required to shape and build the bomb is top-tier shit.

And then even if you could build it, you have to figure out a delivery mechanism, the thing is going to set off every Geiger counter it goes near, and you'll have the NRC on you in hours if not minutes.

If you have the resources to build the device, You could possibly build a ballistic delivery mechanism, but how do you test it for reliability without getting caught?

Nah, the number of people involved, the time, the money, it's just not worth it when a small van and a few thousand litres of nitrogen based fertiliser are so much easier to obtain and prep.

If there's EVER a nuclear 'terrorist' attack, you can bet 100% that it was a (((global power))) behind it.

He was building a reactor, not a bomb. There was zero percent chance his set up would have resulted in the creation of weapons grade material, all he did was give himself and his neighbours cancer. He was a smart idiot.

Uranium 235 is very difficult to mass produce, because it is hard to separate the same chemical element with different number of neutrons because they all act mostly similar chemically.

you need fluorine gas for that, not exactly something you could produce safely in your garden shed in quantity, let alone handle it

Nathan Reyes
Nathan Reyes

Fluorine Gas (despite it dangers) is the least of your problems. How do you build the enrichment centrifuges, which spin so fast that the design of their bearings is still top secret and classified.

A dirty bomb is such a retarded idea. Why go through all that risk and trouble, just to make sure an extra 100 people or so have an increased risk of cancer?

But for Plutonium, it only takes 10 kilograms of Pu239
Holy fuck, is that all? That's like the size of a large can of coke?

Kevin Garcia
Kevin Garcia

true, not to mention the kilograms of uranium ore you need, you would need to set up shop next to a mine

since the ISIS stuff the hospital isotope waste buckets are all subject to controlled disposal now
but I get your point, the word radioactive generates a lot of hysteria but such a dirty bomb would be far from effective

Asher Sullivan

Kayden Bennett
Kayden Bennett

Plutonium 239 on the other hand is not very difficult to mass produce, but it is very difficult to obtain if you don't have the right equipment. For example you would need a fast breeder reactor that bombards Uranium 238, which is non-fuel Uranium you can normally find anywhere with neutrons, these neutrons have a chance to trans-mutate the Uranium 238 into Plutonium 239. It would be very difficult to covertly do this, especially since breeder reactor technology is still very much primitive, and there's almost no one officially using breeder reactors for power generation.

Really? I always thought there was a need to separate the Pu from the breeder byproducts through a complex set of chemical distillations using impossible to obtain solvents? Does the breeder literally pump out elemental Pu239 ?

during cold war, the border region in west germany was a zone of controled destruction in case ussr tempted an invasion into europe, (one of our biggest fears here trying to lighten up with their idiotic duck and hide propaganda lol.)
bridges, tunnels, waterways and some critical roads where build with build in mines who could be detonated via radio and underground telephone cable, as backup, on place by a team each appointed to their buildings and zones, wich where disguised as official goverment buildings. some nuclear devices where build in too. those where dirty bombs to create a barrage or hot zone that would be too toxic to pass trough with your army. while the whole eastgermany was a target for dirty bombs aswell. based on the idea of Gen. William Westmoreland bombing vietnam border zone in china and in north korea with russia

the russians did the same thing on their side and even took it a step further, they literaly mined whole east germany.
some of those installations are still kept in use in west germany, if you know what you are looking at and for you can still see them.
signal houses for bridges and sluises for example or nearby postal buildings are build like you can use them as quick abris or bunkers with underneath their basements everything they need to make a defence for crossing enemy troops and the equipment to comunicate with hq and detonate manually their assignred charges+ 1 months food and water and various gear for nuclear and chemical warfare.
so yes, dirty bombs have their disgusting use.
And some of those bombs are still kept in kleine broghel in belgium illigaly

same, macgyver inspired me to study chemistry
I remember being really disappointed when I found out you can't make a molotoff cocktail with a bottle of chloroform like he did in an episode.

I also as a kid tried making gunpowder like he did from charcoal, mashed up match-heads, and bird poo (as the saltpetre source). I went scraping off old bird poo from walls collecting a shitload, but my gunpowder wouldn't work, he forgot to tell you need to extract the saltpetre from the poo with water first.

Still lots of stuff worked out. Found out that weed killer was indeed pure sodium chlorate, sold in 5 kg bags in the local Brico for dirt cheap, at least until ISIS came along and they banned it EU-wide.

Made my own vacuum pump from fridge compressors, thermite, lots of other stuff.

Yet.

It’s simply a matter of time before this happens. And the fissionable material will come from Pakistan not Iran. The Paks and thier ISI are sympathetic towards the Sunni Wahabbists. This happens in the next 5 to 10 years at most. The device will be smuggled into DC or NYC via semi shipping container.

aah chemistry!
i followed those classes and mechanics on open univeristy on bbc back then when i was 7, asked if i could attend the exams when i was 8 and asked again when i was nine, everyone would agree after i showed my knowledge off but my mom wouldn't.. and whzen i was old enough she could agree that tv learning program was stopped ugh
:(

i used pigeon poo and tried again with chickenpoo. then my grandpapa told me about the batpoo wars during colonial times in south america and the caraibians and i remembered there where bats i had acces to their nesting place not far from his place, that worked for me, but not as explosive as he did ^^

made a working replica from some bombs he had to disarm, like that cruiseship model and the one when his grandpa got kidna.. grandpanapped lol by that crazy bitch in the phoenix building where he supposed to go to a hokeymatch with. disarmed with one of his hokeytickets lol.
i still have those schematics somewhere in my archive though.. i feel like playtime again lol.

Uranium 233 can be made from Thorium (which is fertile, not fissile) and a nigger rigged particle accelerator made by heating hydrogen in a vacuum tube that has opposite polarities than the old crt sets applied to it.

Owen Ward

Also nuclear reactions are electrical reactions, particles strictly speaking dont exist, the Aether is a primodial atmosphere that is so rareified that it passes through solid matter as empty space, what we know of as electricity is when a dipole is created in the aether by attaching an area with an underabundance of it to an area of overabundance, causing a flow as it still behaves as an ideal gas.

Cold electricity is exactly that, its why most superconductors begin to function as such at a very low temperture.

There exist states of molecules and atoms in an aether concentrated state that have exotic properties, these states can be induced electrically.
