You kind of sound like me if I'd actually join the military and got the best case scenario, luckily I got together with the love of my life and my plans changed to finding more down to earth work.
I thought that if things wouldn't turn out the way I'd want I'd either join the military and see if brushing shoulders with death would make me appreciate life or become a mercenary and run off to some god forsaken shithole to make a living through war and see if money off that makes me happy/get shot.

The day before I joined I got walked in on hanging myself. I decided that I'd rather die with adrenaline flowing through my veins. Like you, I wondered if the close encounter with the blackness would give me a new appreciation for life. turns out it has.

I served 8 years; some time in Japan in the 7th fleet and then Washington and San Diego. Overall it’s an awarding experience, especially getting that veteran stamp for finding jobs. I worked at a sheriffs office in California, and it was good getting back in uniform, but the secret is out; good pay/retirement from government jobs with unlimited overtime attracts government slags and losers who leach off the system. 70% of the force is usually trash at a sheriffs office. You see elite workers at the PD, especially in high crime areas. Overall, I plan on leaving and getting into nursing. I met a nurse at the hospital after a back sprain, and he got his degree online and flew out all expense paid to do his clinical. Currently trying to leave the sheriffs office and doing medical work in northern Idaho.
