Chances are I won't meet a Romanian any time soon, just found it interesting. I also considered it almost a term of endearment, like Jimi Hendrix and his band of Gypsy's or Django Reinhardt for example.
In most cases we can understand your use of the term and take it as such so don't worry about it. I think we're just annoyed more about having to talk about them. Ethnic gypsies are not ethnically Romanian and only make up 3% of the population.
