Could we colonize the whole galaxy with current sub-light ships?

And if we could, should we? Maybe Von Neumann probe style?

We can't, read a book.

Why not? What’s the f-ing problem, sir?

Interstelllar medium is hostile as fuck

>Chinese tourists visiting USA circa 2050

He probably talks about something out of our control. Like, the universe expands faster than we can cover it.
Yeah, or that.

Thing is, we don't know for sure. It's all just math, theories from theories, only calculation and extrapolation. I, for one, believe in the electrical universe.

This looks a bit like the space ship described in Bible.

Space big, space cold/hot, space hostile, space really high up.

Basically the closest earth-like planet capable of sustaining life by itself is too far away and would take centuries at best to reach it.
We don't have the technology to colonize other objects closer to us like Mars or Titan because it would require a constant supply of resources from earth.
And this is all ignoring the massive problems like funds, organization and radiation other than the afore mentioned expanding universe.

The best we can do with current technology is colonize one of Jupiters moons.

>expanding universe
Is that really a factor in colonizing the galaxy?

If our SUN is size of pea, the next star is 202 km away. We have been to the Moon, 1/4 size of pea away.

>funds

Fuck you and your money. This is only a problem if we make it a problem (which we are).

Yes we can read a book

Yes, it's not that hard if you have no ethical limits to using technology. There was a paper years ago about searching for spherical changes across star systems to look for just this type of empire.
>nuclear, microwave, laser drives
>Class 1.5 or 2 Civ
>high G probes
>nuke or RKKV follow on
>cold sleep plus gene lab or generation ships
>40 years to nearest star at .1c
>colonize the entire galaxy in a few million years

We could do anything with the institution of man and guidance from God. This I know.

Based reality poster

the distance to cover is increasing so yes
The US military budget is 32 times bigger than NASA budget (21billions in 2019)
A moon base alone would cost 25 to 40 billions.
It's virtually impossible that the US government would choose to dismantle most of its army in favor or space research.
so yes, it's a problem

Wait what, we have "ships" capable of anything more than getting a couple of people and modest supplies up to a an orbiting trashcan?

At what speed is the universe expanding and is our galaxy also drifting apart?

>At what speed is the universe expanding
70km/s per megaparsec but the expansion rate is accelerating
>and is our galaxy also drifting apart?
all galaxies are moving away from each other

>all galaxies are moving away from each other
All matter is expanding. It's irrelevant on the timescales needed to colonize the galaxy.

With current technology we can colonize the Moon, Mars, Venus' atmosphere, and and a few of Jupiter's moons. We can send unmanned probes to anywhere in the solar system and beyond.
