Nevertheless, he is should be remembered as both a massive miscarriage justice and an example of how society fails the people who fall through the cracks.
The man grew up institutionalized and never had a chance. Then, when he got free, he basically lived a naturalistic hippie life and was never even really accused of actually murdering anyone, yet he got convicted of "1st degree murder" and given the death penalty all on the strength of the testimony of one woman, who herself admitted that Charlie never murdered anyone himself....
And to this day his name is still synonymous with "mass murderer".

I mean IDK what to say. I guess in fairness to him he did always claim that he never believed in helter skelter or any of that stuff. There's not really any hard evidence to suggest he did. In a lot of his prison interviews he doesn't seem to be espousing anything even remotely connected to that sort of ideology. So you take that away and maybe he was just a greenpeace activist.

His interviews were great because most of the time he made the uptight, establishment, button downed "so-called-intelligent" interviewer seem kind of dumb, despite all of his crazy mannerisms and weird way of articulating himself.
And I mean I don't really have anything against people like Geraldo or Tom Snyder. I actually always thought Tom Snyder was a really cool guy, but the interviews are fascinating to watch and yeah I think lots of people just felt like Charlie "had a lot of points" and "made sense" when it came down to it, and that's why he became such an enduring figure
And in fairness to Tom he was never really a dick to Charlie either. Tom's got other great interviews with people like Johnny Rotten or Howard Stern where they just go head to head and people can feel however they want, but with Charlie he wasn't really posturing or being pretentious I don't think. Geraldo certainly was though

I mean in the interview with Geraldo Rivera there is a part where Geraldo basically challenges Charlie to a fight and says he could beat him up. And Charlie very intelligently says "Well what would that prove" and Geraldo responds "well, I dunno, not much maybe" meaning that it would at least prove something.
So you have this situation where Geraldo is sitting down next to a supposed mass murderer, and the supposed mass murderer looks like the reasonable and calm one.
