Price signals. Capitalism produces a lot of fucked up externalities but communism is deaf and blind.
Plus capitalism, at least initially, has experts heading industries whereas communism appoints party apparatchiks from the get-go. Millions starve when the dude in charge of agriculture got appointed for having a degree in Marxist-Leninist Literature.
