ESPN was popular because the shows were simply guys talking about sports. The presenters were knowledgeable, entertaining, often accomplished athletes, and had chemistry with one another.

Listening to SC reminded me of my friends and I bullshitting about sports. That was the appeal.

They used to talk about stuff normie guys talked about in a way normie guys talked. It was like having our friends there whenever we turned on the tv.
