It seems odd that any civilization would want old, experienced midwives out of the field. I can understand that removing women from medicine would be a priority, but not for midwives. The priest-class using hysteria to cement their control makes total sense, but I find it hard to believe entire populations would be convinced without any solid evidence to support burning of problematic women.
