I saw this happen at a warehouse, where most of the employees were there 5-10 years, with family obligations and schedules they’d built around the 9 to 5 night shift. Suddenly the employer, after decades of overnight 9 to 5 shifts, decided to change the shift to 6 to 2. Three out of 12 people quit within 1 week.

I put in my 2 weeks notice 3 weeks ago. They asked me if I could stay on an extra 2 weeks on top of what I had given. My wife just had a baby so I asked the company I'm joining if they were okay with moving the start date back a couple of weeks, which they were. I then told my current company that I could do it, but only on the condition that I work from home 100% for those 2 weeks so I can help out with the new baby. They reluctantly agreed. Joke's on them. I transitioned my responsibilities before I ever went on leave with the baby in the first place, the guy who took over doesn't need anything extra from me. I'm basically getting paid for 2 weeks to be at home and more or less on call if anyone needs me for anything. It's sort of like a vacation right now, I'm just relaxing and doing a little yard work.

I get ghosted by employers all the time when applying for jobs. I get interviewed and then straight up ghosted for 6 months and receive a rejection email.

It’s possible to be courteous without slaving away for two additional weeks. When you get fired they don’t let you keep working, so why would I keep working when I quit?

I recently had to choose between two different employers after my last firm was sunk, did interviews with both.

Once upon a time, there was an accepted etiquette on the part of both employer and employee: Two weeks notice allowed an employer to prepare a replacement, and in return employers generally gave advance notice of layoffs. You could still get immediately terminated for egregious offenses, but in general you had time to prep for job loss.

Starting in the 80s, that culture began to break down. It was already badly eroded by the mid-90s when I graduated from college and entered the workforce. Now, the very idea of any sort of mutual loyalty between employer and employed is as dead as the Code of Hammurabi. Despite my generally conservative leanings, I have to place at least 95% of the blame on the employers. They decided the "disposable workforce" concept was the best way to squeeze out extra shekels, ignoring the long-term implications. Fuck 'em.

Kept sending me emails about my new work schedule. The United States functions on a debt-industrial complex. The banks are all insured by the FDIC on their fractional-reserve banking system, so they have a ton of money to lend, almost risk-free. Because the government insures these high-risk loans, the banks are willing to lend massive amounts to people with a high risk of default: millenial school and home loans. These loans have ridiculous interest rates, so in essence, the banks remain in a win-win: if the millenial defaults, the bank is paid back in full - if the millenial pays it off, the bank makes nearly twice the original loan amount. Because the bank makes so much money, they give out FDIC insured high risk loans for almost anything, to anyone.
Where we are now is that millenials are all universally so saturated with debt that they're unable to take on any more, unable to pay off the existing debt, and unable to move forward into the stage of life where they can have kids. "Don't take loans then!" you will say - the plethora of available loans has made the cost of living prohibitively high and inflated almost every good necessary to produce children: schooling, homes, cars, and land.
So, how do the banks keep making money when millenials can't take on more debt and won't have kids? Import debt-free foreigners and load them with debt!

I got laid off in January. No warning, all good performance reviews, they didn't even clear the floor before they made me clean my desk so I got walked down to get my shit in front of everyone. I've been applying for jobs ever since and boomers have been ghosting me nonstop. We'll go back and forth about a job for a week then boom, nothing. I had a fucking recruitment agency ghost me because THEY sent me to an interview with no information and it was for a position that I was overqualified for. Even now I have a contract I could be working but can't because the fucking GOVERNMENT is essentially ghosting me on my requests for the most basic type of security clearance.
