You make sodium chlorate, and yes I do know how long it takes.
Done efficiently using good electrodes, it's not unreasonable to make 20-50lbs a week of it.
To make a ton would probably cost a total of $3000-$4000(power, electrodes, feedstock), and take a year or two. Not too hard for some people living out in the sticks with room for the chlorate cells to run full-time.
2000lbs of NaClO3 can make a 2500-3000lb bomb. Add some magnalium powder(treated with potassium bichromate solution), which can be easily made by smelting scrap aluminum and magnesium together and readily pulverized after cooling, to increase heat and brisance.

I should also mention that you can improvise the chemicals that you can buy and work from there, instead of building from scratch with electrolysis. Fertilizers already have ammonium nitrate in it; it will save time you improvise instead of building from scratch.

Thermite is actually much harder to make, and wouldn't cause explosive damage. Not even copper oxide-based thermite could explode hard enough to do the damage of a true high explosive, though the heat released would ignite anything flammable within a quarter mile of the "bomb"(assuming you use a ton of Cu thermite).
Getting enough aluminum powder to make that much thermite would immediately put you onto a "we gotta go check this fucking guy out NOW" list with the feds. You could use magnalium(which can be powdered at home easily unlike aluminum or magnesium themselves), but buying enough magnesium to make enough magnalium would cost a small fortune. And smelting that much metal would assuredly also cost a fortune and require decent working space.

Because the stahlhelm was a good helmet design, and similarly shaped steel helmets were used by other countries besides Germany, inevitably someone made a Kevlar helmet with a similar basic shape, because it makes for a good helmet.
