Like I said above, I suspect they weren't doing this on their own. Someone was paying them and probably providing the bots for them. The change in political tone on twitter comments is palpable, which means hundreds if not thousands of bots just disappeared. I think Krassenstein&co weren't the only ones that got shut down. Other botnets just got shut off as well. Also, twitter obviously knew what they were doing and was ok with it, if not directly facilitating it. This isn't a purge, it's just closing down an operation that wasn't paying off.
