It's not about selfish gain, it's about a positive orientation that translates into personal and often also professional benefit. But if you look at it as a set of tricks for easy selfish benefit/gain, you have the cart before the horse. Internalizing the wisdom in that book leads to growing out of your narrow selfish bubble and as a result becoming a better person in general.
